MANGA EFFECTS: What Makes Manga So Interesting?

MANGA EFFECTS

In order to carry out the story in a two-dimensional sequential panels, Japanese manga artists use different tools to depict the ambiance and tenor of the scenes and characters. Manga entertains readers not only because it allows people to perceive the story, in fact, it embraces people’s feelings and senses while consuming. To achieve that, emotions, tensions, and sentiments are, most of the time, kept exaggerated in the manga world through the use of ‘manga effects’.

To convey the character’s feeling during important scenes, Manga artist commonly uses the close up shot along with different styles of frame or backdrop, filling in the gap space inside the panel. Examples of these techniques are:

·         Beam of Enlightenment
When the character gets a moment of clarity, shock, or insight

·   Gray Rain of Depression
Accidentally rain is commonly used to indicate that a character is sad, disappointed, or depressed.

·         Love Bubbles / Love Flowers
Normally used in the romantic scene

 Speed Stripes
To exaggerated the fast movement of the character in the scene

·         Pastel-Chalked Freeze Frame
To depict the most crucial part of the event, which could be the climax or the ending of the scene.

Aspect Montage
Another technique used to depict the ambiance of the scene is the Aspect Montage where instead of having the projection of one whole view of the event, artist divides the screen into frames. This aims to raise readers’ sense of awareness, extending their considerations over the details within the scene.

Written Sound Effects
Written Sound Effects is also use to fill in the space to exaggerate the event or specific actions occurred in the page.

Expressing manga figures’ emotions and characters can also be presented through the use of exaggerated emotional iconography. While humans in reality have conventional ways of expressing their reactions, manga usually carries exaggerated physical, visual reactions. Examples of the commonly used ones are:

·       Bishie Sparkle
In manga, attractive men and women are commonly portrayed with a cloud of sparkles.

      Blank White Eyes
The character's eyes are painted with white colour framed by the sloppily-scrawled black boarder around them to represent the act of being shocked or stunned.

·        Blush Sticker
In manga, cheerful or cute characters often have blushes appear on both side of their cheeks. The blush usually appears in the horizontal oval shape sticked on their cheeks as if it is a sticker.

·    Cat Smile
The cat smile is implemented on to the character being playful or mischievous.

·        Nose Bleed
The nosebleed is a visual shorthand/euphemism for sexual arousal. When being aroused, the blood pressure increases. Manga uses this fact as an image communicating the character’s attraction toward other sexes. The over exaggerated amount of blood indicates the extreme sexual excitement of the characters.
